Doctor Who And The Recyclers #1

If you`re going to go to all the trouble and expense of making a specialist prop or costume, it makes economic sense to hang onto it and re-use it again in another show. Here are a few examples of how you can make your Classic Who budget stretch that little bit further…

Almost everyone know how the troopers` helmets from Earthshock were re-used in Trial of a Timelord…

But here`s one you may not have spotted -

in The Sun Makers, look at the thing the Doctor is resting his chessboard on.
Does it look familiar?

It should, `cos it looks like he nicked it from the Sandminer in The Robots of Death as a souvenir!

But it`s not just props that can get recycled, it can be sets too, or at least parts of them. For instance, there`s this one door that turns up in three different Hartnell stories, one of them as part of the Tardis!

2013 DVD Release Schedule

According to Doctor Who Dot TV

dr who on dvd 2013

Looking forward to Mind of Evil, Zygons and Ice Warriors – seems the latter has no animated reconstruction of the missing eps, which we hoped it would. But then, having watched Reign of Terror I can see why – the animation on that is shite and I totally agree with David Darlington in the latest DWM.

Shalka seems a curious choice to release on DVD. Maybe the rights to the online version are about to expire – it has been 10 years – and that`s why they`re releasing it…

But the big question is where is the recently recovered ep of The Underwater Menace? You would have thought it would have been put out with Ice Warriors but it doesn’t look like it, at least at the moment.

So they’re either saving the announcement til nearer the release date, or they`re planning to really rip us off this time and make us all buy Lost In Time – Special Edition!

Dr Who on DVD, so far…

With The Reign of Terror coming out tomorrow, I thought now might be a good time to have a look at just where we are in Who’s journey from VHS onto DVD.

So if you’ve got a complete collection, as of tomorrow this is what it will look like!

Hartnell DVD January 2013
Troughton DVD January 2013
Pertwee DVD January 2013
Tom Baker DVD January 2013
Davison DVD January 2013b
Colin Baker DVD January 2013
McCoy DVD January 2013

all we’re waiting on now is The Tenth Planet, The Ice Warriors, The Mind of Evil & Terror of the Zygons…

With Mind & Zygons scheduled for release soon, that leaves the Cybermen and the Ice Warriors to battle it out for the distinction of being the final DVD release. I reckon the Cybs will win that one…

Rude Who – Poor old Adric…

I don`t know about you but sometimes I wonder just what the Doctor`s thinking…

Do you think he thinks the same things as the rest of us…?

The Castrovalva Discontinuity

Although it sounds like an episode of The Big Bang Theory, it`s actually two glaring continuity errors from part one of the story:

First notice how Peter Davison`s hair changes colour -

BEFORE THE TITLE SEQUENCE

AFTER THE TITLE SEQUENCE

So what happened? Probably the shock of realising that Adric is still around. That`s enough to turn anyone`s hair white!

And it`s not just the Doctor Who`s regenerated, his clothing`s getting in on the act too…

BEFORE REGENERATING – BOOTS

AFTER REGENERATING – SHOES

BLOOPERS! – Castrovalva

The first blooper you`ll likely spot in Castrovalva is that bloody awful flipped shot in part one! These damn things are a pet hate of mine…

But the other one, from part two, you`ve probably missed even thought it`s been there right in front of you all the time. I know because I only just spotted it myself yesterday when I was reviewing the Fan Edit I made of the story last year. So gawd knows how many times I`ve watched this and completely missed it!

You would think that a dirty great boom mic shadow on the lead actor would be something you`d spot straight away but obviusly not! Wonder how many more are lurking in there, unspotted…

That`s the fun thing about Blooper Hunting – there`s always something new to spot that`s hidden right in front of you!

BLOOPERS! – Warriors of the Deep

I thought I`d share some of the many bloopers – other than the Myrka – to be found in this story as a sort of trailer for the forthcoming Fan Edit, which will be uploaded tomorrow, Whoflix Fans!

First, even though it`s dark in the Silurian ship, you can still see that someone hasn`t tucked themsleves in…

… and be warned – this isn`t the last we`ll see of this. Oh, and keep an eye out for the bloke who crashes into those little pedestal things with cyber guns sticking out of them; restricted vision can be a real bugger in the studio!

Next, this isn`t the console cable, it`s the cable of the camera taking the shot of the scanner in this scene…

THIS is the console cable – looks like they`re still using the same white Gaffer Tape as they did on Pyramids

Next, here`s our first boom mic in shot…

And if you`ve ever wondered how that console cable gets connected up…

This is the wobbly set moment everybody knows about, but look to the left and you can see the top of the set. You can see it a couple more times in this scene too!

Boom Mic In Shot #2…

It`s not only Silurians who have trouble tucking themselves in it seems…

…and did you spot the other blooper in that shot? Well, just in case you didn`t, here`s a better look at the wonderful things you can do with Black Gaffer Tape!

so that`s white G-tape for console cables, black for Sea Devil kilts and Silver for the front and rear panels on their tunics – you did spot that didn`t you?

Next, studio lights reflected the monitors on the set – also works for shiny Sea Devil helmets too!

anyone know that Mike Oldfield song Boom Mic Shadow On The Wall?

I feel sorry for those poor sods stuck inside the Myrka – here`s how you can tell they`re in there…

Whoa, check those flares! Silurians didn`t even have those back in the Seventies! And I really like the matching brown shoes, nice!

That boom mic shadow`s still there…

…and keep an eye on Maddox when he`s being brainwashed, there`s another one which doesn`t screengerab too well but trust me, it`s there all right!

Seems it`s not just the back of the neck that`s causing problems with these costumes – and this isn`t the only Sea Devil with a neck problem [I resisted the temptation to mention turtle necks - oh, until just now when I did. Bugger!]

FFS! Talk about a warbrobe malfunction!

well, that`s three reasons for not having brightly-lit sets with no shadows!

Seriously, was there no-one from wardrobe on set when this story was filmed? And this isn`t him splitting his trousers btw, this is a white tie cord – the same bright idea someone would use on the Vervoids later…

Boom Mic In Shot #3…

Everybody knows this is wet green paint from the Kyrka costume being worked on right up until filming the bloody thing…

… but what you might not have spotted is another cameo appearance from the two poor buggers inside it!

Boom Mic In Shot #4

And here`s it`s shadow…

Wardrobe are never around when you need them…

… I mean, are you seriously trying to tell me absolutely nobody spotted this on a monitor? I mean, I know they were pushed for time in studio but how long would it have taken to tuck him in? Sheesh…

I don`t know what I like more about this shot – the fact that we`ve got Boom Mic In Shot #6 or the fact that on Seabase they use bubblewrap instead of a duvet! WTF?

Boom Mic In Shot #7!

Looks like Pixar, sorry Icthar, hasn`t noticed his vortex manipulator thingy needs a bit more double sided sticky tape to hold it on… Wardrobe! Oh, what`s the fucking point…

Okay… Warbrobe – You`re Fired!

even the shadows don`t help…

there`s that white cord again….

… did they never think of dying the fucking thing?

And Finally…

it looks like the Hand Of Sutekh has fallen through a Time Corridor!

and that was Warriors On The Cheap – with Wardrobe Malfunctions by Judy Pepperdine

Myrka Mirth #3

Okay, so in Warriors on the Cheap the Doctor falls in the water and gets soaked…

he then steals the Seabase uniform of an unconscious guard who has been electrocuted by Turd-oh booby trapping the door…

When the Doctor leaves him the guard is wearing a full set of combinations as well as what look like kneepads [?]…

but later the Doctor can be clearly seen wearing a T-shirt so where did he get it from?

Oh,wait – I can feel an Internet Meme coming on…
