The £50,000 Breakfast – a Mr Meaker moment

Mr Meaker Moments – in honor of Ed Brayshaw – are those moments when you`re watching some old ITC show and spot an actor who`s been in Doctor Who. Thing is, it only works one way. For example –

You watch Rentaghost and say “Oh look, it’s the War Chief”.
You don`t watch The War Games and go “Oh look, it’s Mr Meaker”!

I was watching this episode of The Avengers on DVD – Diana Rigg Era, of course – when who did I spot but Anneke Wills!

Now according to The Avengers Forever site [sadly no longer updated] this episode finished production on 20th July 1967. Given that Polly has short hair in The Macra Terror, which wrapped on 6th May 1967, was she wearing a wig in The Faceless Ones? Looks like it, as she finished filming that on April 8th.

You can also spot John Laurimore from The Masque of Mandragora in this episode…

Revenge of the Cybermen – DVD Easter Egg

There`s one Egg on the Revenge of the Cybermen DVD and here`s where to find it –

I`ve been catching up on a lot of the DVDs I was too poor to buy when they first came out, such was life on the dole. But now that I`m at college and working my way through my Student Loan I`ve been clearing the backlog, which consisted of Delta, Dominators, Cyber Tales Box Set, Revisitations 1 and Seeds of Doom.

On wednesday I ordered Dominators for £5.99 at [as well as SJA series2 for the same price!] and the Cyber Tales box for £11.99. They all came today, which is pretty quick delivery.

And today I found Revisitations 1 for £12.59 at!

So that only leaves Delta & Seeds and then I`ll be all caught up. Hooray!

An Unearthly Target

Ok, it`s time to roll out the blooperfest that is The Ark!

Before we get going, let me just point out that the current Blooper Champion is The Dominators. Sad to say, as well as having probably the most rubbish aliens in the entire history of Who – ok, maybe a close run thing with the Krotons – it`s also a story with a helluva lot of bloopers. But will there be enough for us to have a new Blooper Champion?

Well, let`s count `em up as we go…. Blooper Hunting!

Here`s a good one to start off with – our first boom mic in shot!

Next, that looks like a member of the crew to me, not the crew of the Ark that is…

Here`s our first boom mic shadow. Be warned, there`s a lotta these [same guy from The Dominators maybe?]

That`s the shadow of the camera that took the previous close-up trying – and failing – to get out of this shot without anyone noticing…

Boom Mic Shadow #2…

Oh look, the Doctor`s wearing a wig…

Ok, if you`re gonna have a monster that`s just a man in a rubber suit, waddling like a constipated penguin, the least you can do is try and cover up the bloody zip at the back of the costume. And certainly don`t let them turn their back to the camera!

Was the budget so tight they couldn`t even run to a new sheet of plywood?

Boom Mic Shadow #3

Boom Mic In Shot #2

Boom Mic Shadow #4

Boom Mic Shadow #5

This one`s quite tricky to spot, as it runs down the edge of the wall, but believe me, this is Boom Mic Shadow #6 [can you see a pattern developing here?]

and here`s Boom Mic Shadow #7!

Just for a change, here`s something different – look closely and you can see the camera reflected in the monitor!

Zip Alert #2

Studio lights reflected…

Zip Alert #3

“Invisble” wires #1…

Dodgy painted backdrop [reused in Time-flight!]

Boom Mic Shadow #8 – and it`s huge! Just look at the size o` that thing on the wa` behind ye, Docturrr…

Could somebody call Wardrobe please…

“Invisible” wires #2

Zip Alert #4

Zip Alert #5 [you`d think Mike Imison would have learned by now, wouldn`t you…]

Zip Alert #6 [what did I say…]

Zip Alert #7

Boom Mic Shadow #9

Boom Mic Shadow #10

Boom Mic Shadow #11

Zip Alert #8

The fact that someone`s left a door open, causing a breeze to move this backcloth somewhat spoils the illusion… [it looks kinda reddish or orangey in the background of the colour photo of Jackie Lane on the set] And notice the lack of a plywood panel on the electric buggy/cart thingy…

“Invisible” wires #3

Camera Reflected In Monitor #2

Boom Mic Shadow #12 – and it`s an absolute belter!

It`s not just this bloke, there`s a female extra just after him and they both walk right acros the bottom of this inlay shot, totally ruining the effect. Nice one!

Zip Alert #9

Boom Mic Shadow #13

Boom Mic Shadow #14

Zip Alert #10

Boom Mic Shadow #15

Boom Mic Shadow #16

Boom Mic Shadow #17

Boom Mic Shadow #18

Boom Mic Shadow #19

Ok, so how did you do with your counting?

BLOOPERS! – The Mutants

Ok, here`s all the bloopers I`ve managed to find for the latest Pertwee DVD, The Mutants. It`s a story that I didn`t recall very well as it never made much of an impression on me. It`s ok but the story never really grips you and none of the characters really engage you. And Cotton, bless him, is a dreadful actor and completely miscast – he`s right up there with Aidan Murphy from The Time Monster. They should have shot him instead of good old Stubbsy!

So here goes –

Directors always need to be on the look out for studio lights being reflected in shot…

… as well as boom microphone shadows!

Like I was saying…

… it`s not just the shadow you need to watch out for!

Costume designers also need to be careful to hide the joins…

And the props dept needs to make sure those masks are quite sturdy, no bits dropping off on location…

Studio lights + shiny helmets [!] = blooper!

I dunno what they were trying to mask off here in this CSO shot, but I`m sure it wasn`t Varan`s hand!

Here we can see how many lights Chris Barry used on location. Four of `em, all nicely reflected in the Marshall`s helmet…

It`s not terribly clear from this screengrab, but there`s a boom shadow crossing Pertwee`s face here…

Not entirely sure what these are, but I`m certain we weren`t meant to see them!

Wide shots can be tricky if you don`t want the audience to see that boom microphone up in the top right corner of the screen…

Looks like the maintenance budget for Skybase has been cut…

And finally, watch out in case your cameras get too close to your actors…

Right, I`m off out now to buy The Ark!

BLOOPERS! Pertwee`s Footwear Foulup

I`m currently on a Blooper Hunt through the latest Pertwee DVD release The Mutants. Now as you know, I don`t normally bother with discontinuities but this one`s a cracker!

In Episodes one & two, the Doctor is wearing shoes…

..then suddenly he`s wearing boots!

Now we know the Pertwee Doctor is pretty vain when it comes to his appearance [Planet of the Daleks for example], but stopping to change your footwear when you`re trying to escape? Nah…

The change to boots actually ocurs near the end of episode two, but its clearer in episode three. So he spends the next few eps in his new footwear –

– but still finds time to change back before leaving Skybase!

Ok, here`s the well-known blooper where you can clearly see that McCoy`s got his glasses on…
