So, annuals apart, that’s the end of the first 7-year run in TV Comic.
When he heard about the Doctor being exiled to Earth, Malcolm Hulke complained that there were now only two storylines available – “mad scientist” and “invasion”. He forgot “time-travelling bulldozers”.
Actually, for all their faults, TV Comic managed some nice variations on Hulke’s themes – I particularly liked the Avengers-villain style of the crooked scientist in “The Rocks from Venus”. Overall, there is much more here to keep a primary-school reader interested than in the nursery comics Doctor Who Adventures has ben publishing over the last few years.
So two cheers, at least, for TV Comic!
Good point. Hadn’t thought about it before, but now that you mention it, I don’t suppose the storytelling in DWA is that much more sophisticated than TVC. A fan who has pre-teen kids should show them these strips and get their reaction, a bit like DWM did with Class 4G and Terror of the Zygons. It’d be interesting to see if they still engage fankids today as much as they did their parents back in the 60s and 70s!
