I’ve never liked the whole “easy as Pi” scene as it makes no sense, so instead I wanted to work in another monster cameo and who better than the potato heads. Looking at the various versions of them in all their stories, in the Classic Series that is, I reckon Lynx is the best looking so I used him over any of the others whose names begin with “S”.
And since Sontarans are meant to be a clone race for once we get to see them all looking the same, which left me with the problem of how to differentiate between them. The answer was simple – give the leader a gold collar and helmet to denote his rank.
COVER – the cover for “Issue 2” is an homage to the Alister Pearson VHS release, with the Doctors arranged in the same order.
PANEL 2 – The Cybermen’s dialogue box is modelled on the one used for their appearances in TV Comic.
PANEL 5 – One of the nice things about having Tom making his way to the tower instead of Hurndall, is that he gets to meet the Earthshock Cybermen before his successor so I had to try and get at least one shot where they were both in frame together.
PANEL 6 – One of the nice things about having Tom making his way to the tower instead of Hurndall, is that he gets to meet the Ainley Master early. The shot of him in this panel is from The King’s Demons IIRC. And a namecheck for the Raston Warrior Robot!
PANEL 1: This would have been a CSO shot on telly
PANEL 4: I really like this sequence with Tom instead of Hurndall. Why Terrance Dicks never mentioned Exxilon in the original I don’t know, it’s such an obvious thing to do. So I did.
PANEL 5: Using the sonic makes a lot more sense for Tom than “playing pitch and toss” as in the original.
PANEL 6: An oblique reference to the sonic’s demise in The Visitation.
PANEL 1: Pairing Dr Tom with Tegan made sense, as you can have some fun with the fact that she knows him but he doesn’t know her.
PANEL 2: Tom Baker has used the “I” word in the past so I thought I ought to work it in for his Doctor!
PANEL 4: This is a digression from the Tom plotline that we’ll follow until we get to the Tower but I couldn’t come up with a better “cliffhanger” so I kept the scene in. I’ll leave it up to you to work out where we cut away to the other Doctors.
PANEL 6: The white dot is Dr Tom , the blue-y dot is Tegan and the red dots are probably the Cybermen.
PANEL 1: The four white dots are Doctors 1 to 4, the greyish dot is the Master since he’s no longer 100% Time Lord
PANEL 4: In the original Terrance Dicks outline, it was Tom who was meant to get transmatted to the capitol, so here he sets out on the journey Hurndall made on TV, a journey that Five would have made had Tom taken part…
PANEL 6: Billy gets the companions names wrong, just like he used to to do back in the day with
Chesterfield, Chesserman, Chatterton, Chesterton…
