AVERAGE AUDIENCE – 5.45M

With the release of the BARB viewing figures for last week’s series finale, the final ratings for the whole of series eight look like this:
SERIES EIGHT AVERAGE AUDIENCE = 7.2M
… which is consistent with the averages for each of Capaldi’s three predecessors. So although, by the BARB measure, it looks like the audience for the show is down it isn’t really.
With Kill The Moon having a similar overnight figure to The Caretaker [4.2M versus 4.8M] it looks like things are staying pretty stable ratings-wise at around 7 million viewers each week. Halfway through the run, here’s how Series Eight is shaping up so far:
and if you compare Capaldi’s first series to that of each of his predecessors, things look like this:
Three things worth noting before we all start to panic over these consistent, but still relatively low viewing figures:
1] we’ve just come off the back of the Fiftieth, so there may be a bit of Who fatigue among the non-fan audience
2] this is the first season to start transmission in the Autumn, whereas all the others TX`d in the Spring
3] the Average Audience for these first six eps is 7.3M, which is consistent with what every previous series has achieved.
With Deep Breath having a healthy final rating of 9.1m, what better time than to look back on how his predecessor did ratings-wise…
Average Audience = 7.3M
Average Audience = 7.7M
And here’s what the entire Matt Smith run looks like ratings-wise
This gives Matt Smith an overall average audience of 9.2M or 8.4M if you discount The Day of The Doctor.

Here is the latest Ratings Graph, this time for Fifth Doctor Peter Davison`s episodes.
One of the good things about showing the ratings like this is that it makes the changes in the viewing figures much clearer than a simple list of figures ever could.
Some interesting things to note here:
The top [average] rated Davison story was BLACK ORCHID!
Only two stories gained viewers with every episode – FOUR TO DOOMSDAY and THE VISITATION
The only Davison story to lose viewers with every episode was WARRIORS OF THE DEEP
From SNAKEDANCE to ENLIGHTENMENT, episodes 2 & 4 did far better than episodes 1 & 3
His first year averaged about 2 million more viewers than his second and third
Average Audience Year 1 = 9.2M
Average Audience Year 2 – 6.9M
Average Audience Year 3 = 7.1M
Here are the graphs for each individual story:
FOUR TO DOOMSDAY
ARC OF INFINITY
THE KING`S DEMONS
THE FIVE DOCTORS = 7.7M
WARRIORS OF THE DEEP
RESURRECTION OF THE DALEKS
PLANET OF FIRE
