#1 – Where an Audio Story references a TV Adventure, locate the former as close as possible to the latter.
#2 – If Story A is released before Story B, then A happens before B, unless something in-story says otherwise.
The history of Gallifrey before the Doctor was born. Rassilon, Omega, Vampires, The Death Zone, Minyos etc. We know relatively little about the Doctor’s early life on Gallifrey. THE DEADLY ASSASSIN reveals that he is a member of the Prydonian Chapter of Time Lord society, but we know almost nothing about his family, except for his granddaughter Susan. Which suggests he had a wife and at least one child…
LORD OF TIME
The Doctor’s early life on Gallifrey, about which much remains unknown. We do know that he becomes a student at The Academy, where he makes his first friend, the Master. For some as yet unknown reason, they later become enemies. He gets into the Matrix Cloisters and learns about the prophecies concerning The Hybrid from the Cloister Wraiths.
ESCAPE FROM GALLIFREY
The later years of the Doctor’s life on Gallifrey. The exact reasons why he left are currently unclear, at least on television. On audio however, GALLIFREY: DISASSEMBLED suggests that he and Susan ran away from their home planet to escape execution by the Lord Burner on the orders of President Pandad the 7th.
Following on from what we briefly saw in THE NAME OF THE DOCTOR, this story details the Doctor and Susan’s first trip in the TARDIS after they escape from Gallifrey. Among the possessions Susan manages to take from their house before they leave is the communication node that future companion Nyssa will find in THE TOY.
THE SLEEPING BLOOD
This adventure takes place soon after Susan and the Doctor have left Gallifrey behind, as Susan says it didn’t take long for her and the Doctor to think of the TARDIS as “home”.
All the Doctor & Susan’s various Untold Adventures that have been referred to, but which we have’t seen or heard yet, such as his various meetings with important people in Earth’s history, go here.
Susan says that the story she relates here happens before the TARDIS arrives on Earth in 1963, so it has to go before QUINNIS.
Susan says that this is the last adventure she and the Doctor had before the TARDIS arrived on Earth in 1963. Which ties in with what Susan says in EDGE OF DESTRUCTION.
TOTTER’S LANE, 1963
The TARDIS arrives on Earth in May 1963, disguising itself as a Police Box, five months before AN UNEARTHLY CHILD. Susan convinces her grandfather to let her attend Coal Hill School…
The three TV Episodes immediately following AN UNEARTHLY CHILD.
THE MASTERS OF LUXOR
I’ve put the three ‘Lost’ Hartnell stories by Anthony Coburn and Morris Fahri as early as possible. This audio states that the other two, THE FRAGILE YELLOW ARC OF FRAGRANCE and FAREWELL, GREAT MACEDON take place before it.
HERE THERE BE MONSTERS
Susan says that Ian and Barbara have settled in by this time, placing this adventure quite early on for them. Skaro gets mentioned so I’ve put this as early as possible, after the Lost Stories.
THE TRANSIT OF VENUS
Ian says that this adventure takes places after the events of THE SENSORITES, in a gap that I’m not sure exists between that story and THE REIGN OF TERROR, but the explanation for the Doctor still wanting to put him and Barbara off the Ship is just about plausible…
Ian quotes the Doctor’s line at the end of THE REIGN OF TERROR about their destiny being in the stars, putting this story after that one.
THE FLAMES OF CADIZ
Ian mentions Captain Cook, putting this after THE TRANSIT OF VENUS. Given that the Doctor is still going to put Ian & Barbara off the Ship in THE REIGN OF TERROR, the only place this can go is here, after the earlier release THE WANDERER.
THE LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA
Ian again quotes the Doctor’s line at the end of THE REIGN OF TERROR, which puts it after THE WANDERER, the first audio to mention it, and also after THE FLAMES OF CADIZ, which was released before it.
DOMAIN OF THE VOORD
The travellers recognise the Voord, putting it some time after their initial encounter in THE KEYS OF MARINUS. Since it’s the first Early Adventure, I’ve put it after the earlier Companion Chronicle releases.
THE DESTINATION WARS
The Doctor has been re-calibrating the TARDIS, which would suggest a placement after MARCO POLO. But later Barbara says she has “…seen Ian bluff lots of alien scientists” which means it must take place later rather than earlier. For that reason, I have located the adventures of the Bradley Doctor after the Early Adventures featuring the original cast.
As this story only features Ian & Barbara, it has to go after THE DALEK INVASION OF EARTH, when Susan leaves, and before THE RESCUE, when Vicki arrives.
For some reason, author Jacqueline Rayner decides to locate this audio in a Story Gap that I’m not convinced exists, as the end of THE ROMANS is clearly intended to lead straight into THE WEB PLANET.
THE ROCKET MEN
I didn’t hear anything to indicate when this takes place, so I’ve arbitrarily placed it here.
THE DARK PLANET
The Astral Map from THE WEB PLANET gets a mention, so I’ve put this after that story.
THE SLEEPING CITY
Ian refers to being being Knighted by King Richard, putting this story somewhere after THE CRUSADE. Since the end of THE CRUSADE leads straight into the start of THE SPACE MUSEUM, it can only go here.
THE UNWINDING WORLD
Vicki mentions her trip to Rome, placing this adventure after THE ROMANS.
THE DOCTOR’S TALE
Vicki implies that this adventure happens after the events of THE CRUSADE.
THE FIFTH TRAVELLER
This story mentions THE WEB PLANET, putting this after the Doctor’s trip to Vortis.
Vicki says this is soon after Steven joined them, so I’ve placed it just after THE TIME MEDDLER.
Vicki recalls the Doctor saying he can’t land at a funfair every time, which seems to be a reference to the events of FROSTFIRE.
I didn’t hear anything to indicate when this adventure takes place, other than Steven saying they’re on Earth again, which would indicate it follows FROSTFIRE.
THE BOUNTY OF CERES
The Doctor is experimenting with the dimensional controller from the Monk’s Tardis, placing this adventure somewhere after THE TIME MEDDLER.
THE SECRET HISTORY
Since this story was released after THE BOUNTY OF CERES but before THE RAVELLI CONSPIRACY, I’ve located it between them.
ACROSS THE DARKENED CITY
Since MISSION TO THE UNKNOWN, the next TV Story after GALAXY 4 doesn’t feature the Doctor, I’ve located this story here, as an audio substitute for what the 1965 audience saw on television.
Given that Sara Kingdom dies at the end of THE DALEK MASTERPLAN, any audio adventures featuring her must happen within the larger ongoing narrative of that story, in the Story Gap between episode 7 of Masterplan, THE FEAST OF STEVEN, and episode 8, VOLCANO. Since this story starts just as the travellers are toasting Christmas, the very end of THE FEAST OF STEVEN, this story has to go first despite coming out after the earlier releases in this Story Gap.
THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY
HOME TRUTHS mentions this adventure, as do the other two Ely House stories, THE DROWNED WORLD and THE GUARDIAN OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM, meaning this has to go first after THE ANACHRONAUTS.
THE GUARDIAN OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM
The events of this story are referred to in the earlier releases HOME TRUTHS and THE DROWNED WORLD, putting it before both those stories despite being released after them.
Although this was the first audio to feature Sara Kingdom, since it refers to the events of THE GUARDIAN OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM, it has to after that story, despite being released before it.
THE DROWNED WORLD
Since the framing story follows directly on from the earlier audio HOME TRUTHS, this audio has to go after that one.
AN ORDINARY LIFE
Since this is the first Early Adventure to feature Steven & Sara I’ve put it after the early Companion Chronicles releases.
THE PERPETUAL BOND
Steven says this story takes place immediately after the death of Sara Kingdom at the end of THE DALEK MASTERPLAN.
Steven mentions Tombstone, putting this after THE GUNFIGHTERS.
RETURN OF THE ROCKET MEN
Steven mentions spending months in Russia, which puts this after the events of MOTHER RUSSIA.
THE WAR TO END ALL WARS
Steven mentions The Rocket Men, so I’ve put this after the earlier release THE RETURN OF THE ROCKET MEN.
TALES FROM THE VAULT
There’s no in-story indication of when the adventure Steven relates in this release happens so I’ve arbitrarily placed it here.
UNTOLD ADVENTURES: THE OVIDS
In SMOKE AND MIRRORS [May 2013], according to his Fifth incarnation, the First Doctor, Ben & Polly met up with Harry Houdini and encountered the alien Ovids in New York sometime in the 1890s.
THE TENTH PLANET
The adventure THE LOCKED ROOM, which takes place in the Doctor’s mind, happens between episodes 3 & 4.
TWICE UPON A TIME
With the Mondas Cybermen defeated, the Doctor leaves Ben & Polly behind in the Cybership at the end of Episode 4 and makes his way back to the TARDIS, knowing that he will soon regenerate. But on the way he meets the Twelfth Doctor, who is on the verge of his own regeneration…
Following the events of TWICE UPON A TIME, the First Doctor’s TARDIS returns to the South Pole. Ben & Polly enter just in time to see the First Doctor start to regenerate…
