#1 – Where an Audio Story references a TV Adventure, locate the former as close as possible to the latter.
#2 – If Story A is released before Story B, then A happens before B, unless something in-story says otherwise.
EXPLORATION EARTH & THE PESCATONS
I didn’t hear anything to indicate exactly when these two adventures take place but, given that there’s no mention of them heading back to UNIT HQ, I’ve placed them between THE SEEDS OF DOOM and THE MASQUE OF MANDRAGORA.
Follows on directly from the end of THE TALONS OF WENG-CHIANG.
THE VALLEY OF DEATH
Despite making what could be taken as a reference to her change of eye colour at the end of HORROR OF FANG ROCK, the tone of this story is more Hinchcliffe than Williams. As a result, I’ve located it after Big Finish’s first season of Four and Leela stories that are set before the Doctor & Leela’s encounter with Reuben the Rutan…
The Doctor is still trying to educate Leela, and the tone is more Philip Hinchcliffe than Graham Williams, which would seem to put it just after HORROR OF FANG ROCK.
The story features the wooden console room, putting it before the events of EMPATHY GAMES.
The story starts with the destruction of the wooden console room, meaning the latest this adventure can take place is just before the next console room is seen for the first time in THE INVISBLE ENEMY.
THE FOE FROM THE FUTURE
In DESTINATION NERVA, the Doctor says he once knew a butler whose name was Butler, which sounds like a reference to the character of Butler in this story. But it must be a different Butler he’s talking about, otherwise this story would have to go before THE TALONS OF WENG-CHIANG which is problematic given how similar they are. Despite being a Hinchliffe Era story, the level of humour in the adaptation puts it firmly into the Graham Williams era of the show. And since there is no K9, I’ve placed this just before his debut story.
THE LIGHT AT THE END
I didn’t hear anything to indicate exactly when this adventure happens for the Fourth Doctor and Leela. K9 isn’t mentioned, so it’s probably before THE INVISIBLE ENEMY. What might be a reference to the secondary console room suggests this takes place before EMPATHY GAMES, but in that story the Doctor tells Leela there are plenty of other console rooms, so I reckon the one Four and Eight find themselves in is another one altogether.
THE SUNMAKERS & IMAGE OF THE FENDAHL
It’s clear from the Doctor’s appearance that IMAGE OF THE FENDAHL was filmed after THE SUNMAKERS so I’ve swapped the running order of the two stories for consistency’s sake.
THE TIME VAMPIRE
The Doctor is working on K9 mk2, and since K9 mk1 is out of action in IMAGE OF THE FENDAHL I’ve located this story just after that one as such a placement makes sense of the Doctor constructing his own, improved version based on the inactive original.
I didn’t hear anything to indicate when this adventure takes place for the Doctor, Leela & K9, so I’ve arbitrarily placed it, and the others that follow, in the last available gap before Leela leaves.
NIGHT OF THE VASHTA NERADA
The Doctor says he came to Funworld feeling a bit down after his previous companion ‘…left for pastures new’. Since he can only be referring to either Sarah Jane or Leela, I think it’s more likely that it’s the latter as Leela left by choice but Sarah didn’t.
THE STUFF OF NIGHTMARES
Mike Yates says that the Doctor tells him about his recent escapades including ‘skulls from the dawn of time’, a clear reference to the events of IMAGE OF THE FENDAHL. Since the Fourth Doctor is alone all of the Nest Cottage Adventures can only take place in the Story Gap between THE INVASION OF TIME and THE RIBOS OPERATION.
THE THING FROM THE SEA
Since this is written by Paul Magrs, who wrote the Nest Cottage adventures, and read by Susan Jameson, who was in them, this can only really go after SURVIVORS IN SPACE.
I didn’t hear anything to indicate which segment of the Key To Time the Doctor & Romana are looking for when this story happens. But since Romana made her first visit to Earth in THE STONES OF BLOOD, this story has to go after that one.
TALES FROM THE VAULT
Romana hints that they are still looking for the Key To Time so, given that there’s no in-story indication of which segment they are looking for when this happens, I’ve arbitrarily placed this after FERRIL’S FOLLY.
For the original Romana, this adventure takes place just before THE ARMAGEDDON FACTOR.
THE STEALERS FROM SAIPH
Romana says she and the Doctor have being staying in a hotel in Entibes for several weeks, suggesting their search for The Key To Time is over, placing this after THE ARMAGEDDON FACTOR.
THE AUNTIE MATTER
Since this is the first Full Cast Audio to feature the Doctor and Romana I’ve placed it after the earlier Companion Chronicles release THE STEALERS FROM SAIPH.
THE ROMANCE OF CRIME & THE ENGLISH WAY OF DEATH
I’ve located these audios in the same gap as the one where the novels they were adapted from were located.
THE WELL MANNERED WAR
I’ve located this, the third adaptation of a Gareth Roberts Missing Adventure novel, after the previous two to make a trilogy.
THE PYRALIS EFFECT
Romana doesn’t see the need for a sonic screwdriver, putting this before THE HORNS OF NIMON, where she has made her own.
With mentions for both Romana’s sonic and Salyavin, I’ve located this adventure after the two stories where they first feature on TV.
NIGHTMARE OF EDEN
I’ve swapped this story with SHADA, as the Doctor’s coat being ripped apart by the Mandrels gives him a valid reason to get himself the new burgundy outfit he will wear from THE LEISURE HIVE onwards.
THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE.
Romana mentions the events of NIGHTMARE OF EDEN so this story has to take place after it.
THE BEAST OF KRAVENOS
This and any other audios featuring the Doctor & Romana that are set during Tom’s final season can only go in the gap between THE LEISURE HIVE and MEGLOS.
THE INVASION OF E-SPACE
Given that it features both Romana & Adric, the only Story Gap this can possibly fit into is between STATE OF DECAY and WARRIORS’ GATE.
Given that it only features the Doctor & Adric, the only Story Gap this can possibly fit into is between THE KEEPER OF TRAKEN and LOGOPOLIS.
